Dispelling Myths About Skilled Trades.

Nov 30, 2024

Part # 2
Of our College vs. Trades Series.

Welcome back! Last week, we kicked off the conversation about the big decision: college vs. skilled trades.

This week, we’re tackling a critical piece of the puzzle—the myths that often surround skilled trades.

Despite offering high-paying, rewarding careers, skilled trades are still fighting an outdated reputation. Let’s break down these myths and reveal the truth.

Myth #1: Skilled Trades Are “Plan B” Careers

The Truth: Skilled trades aren’t fallback options—they’re purpose-driven professions essential to modern society.

  • Every day, skilled trade workers build and maintain the infrastructure we rely on: homes, schools, hospitals, and even the Internet.
  • According to the National Association of Manufacturers, 95% of construction and manufacturing employers are struggling to fill skilled positions, which are in high demand.

Skilled trades require intelligence, creativity, and technical know-how. It’s not a backup—it’s a first-class career choice.

Myth #2: Skilled Trades Don’t Pay Well

The Truth: Many skilled trade workers out-earn college graduates, especially when you factor in debt.

Here’s the reality:

  • Electricians: The median salary is $80,040/year.
  • Welders: Top earners make $90,000+ annually—with only a 6-month to 1-year certification.
  • HVAC Technicians: Those specializing in green technology can make $95,000+ per year.

Plus, skilled trade workers often get paid to learn through apprenticeships. Your child can earn while they build their expertise.

Myth #3: Skilled Trades Are Physically Exhausting and Dirty

The Truth: While trades involve physical work, many roles focus on precision, problem-solving, and technology.

Consider these examples:

  • Modern plumbers use advanced diagnostic tools like cameras and sensors.
  • Electricians work with cutting-edge smart systems and renewable energy installations.
  • Welders are using robotics and automation for complex projects.

Trades are evolving with technology, creating safer and more innovative work environments than ever before.

Myth #4: Skilled Trades Don’t Offer Career Growth

The Truth: Skilled trades offer countless opportunities for advancement.

Here’s how:

  • Many skilled workers become business owners, managing their teams and clients.
  • With additional certifications, they can specialize in high-demand fields like solar energy, automation, or industrial refrigeration.
  • Skilled trade professionals are often promoted to management roles thanks to their experience and leadership skills.
Skilled trades aren’t a “dead end”—they’re the start of a fulfilling career with unlimited potential.

Why This Matters

These myths can hold back talented young people from discovering careers that align with their passions and skills.

By understanding the reality of skilled trades, you can help your child make an informed decision about their future.

Next Steps:
This week, challenge the myths with your child. Discuss what excites them about careers that involve hands-on work, technology, and creativity.

Stay tuned—next week, we’ll examine the financial breakdown of college vs. trade school, showing the true cost and value of each path.
